“I get in fights with people. They say, “I don’t support gay marriage because it goes against my religious belief.” I say, “Well, fuck you, then.” That’s my answer to everything. I’m sick of explaining to people why we deserve equality. I jump ahead to the “Fuck you, then” argument.” —Margaret Cho (via sexisnottheenemy)

“I have a few friends who are straight male dominants, and they’re both feminists. They fight rape culture, work for pro-choice causes, and check their privilege as needed. They’re happy to work under women, and listen to women, hell they’re friends with female dominants, and even though they don’t play with these women, they respect them and treat them as equals. So, how can these good, decent, kind hearted, egalitarian men enjoy tying up their girlfriends and beating them?

Because their girlfriends consent, because their girlfriends enjoy it. It’s not about man dominating woman because he’s man and she’s woman and that’s how it goes. It’s about two lovers, one who is sexually aroused by delivering pain/dominance/etc and another who is sexually aroused by receiving pain/dominance/etc.”

@LalalaLimerick Song of the Day: “Midnight Sun” from Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Johnny Mercer Songbook

The Desert Island Dozen [pt.  2]

Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Johnny Mercer Songbook  - Part of me likes to pretend that my favorite artists were thinking of me [or at least someone like me] when creating the music that I most love of theirs [ask me how I feel about Laura Nyro or Garland Jeffires sometime if you don’t believe me].  While I’m fairly certain Ella probably didn’t make the lion’s share of musical decisions in her “Songwriters Series” I can’t help thinking that Nelson Riddle, Normam Granz & co. were doing their best to create worlds that only Ella’s voice could inhabit.  While this isn’t the strongest set of songs in the series, it feels the most like Ella.  Whenever I hear other singers try their hand at “Skylark” or “Midnight Sun” I can see Ella…shaking her head and smiling ruefully.

When you put yourself out there for the public to see, the inevitable will happen. You’ll make a few new friends, you’ll create a fan base and most assuredly, you’ll have people who don’t like you…
