Graham Parker - Squeezing Out Sparks - He didn’t have the song craft genius of Elvis Costello or the classical training and traditionalist streak like Joe Jackson or even the Mutt & Jeff cuteness of Squeeze’s Difford and Tilbrook. But for one brief moment, he was more impassioned, more immediate, more cynical and more committed than any of them. To this day, I still slide back in my seat a bit when “Discovering Japan” comes roaring out of my speakers, and I’ll bet Tori Amos lies awake at night wishing she could write a pro-choice song as dark and complicated as “Can’t Be Too Strong.” Squeezing Out Sparks is one of the best albums most people have never heard.
